Even in this world of multi-channel environments, Gump’s has continued to offer not only exceptional service, but also an experience — a journey of endless discovery. It’s true what they say: there’s only one Gump’s.

Since 1861

Thanks to the California Gold Rush, San Francisco was prospering in 1861 when Gertrude Gump and her husband established their business providing mirrors, gilded frames and cornices. When brothers Solomon and Gustave Gump eventually took over, they began selling art, décor, and fine tableware to newly minted millionaires.

Within a few years, business was booming; by the time Solomon’s son, Abraham Livingston, took over in the early 1900s, the store started shifting its focus. Using good taste as his compass, A.L. — as he was known — sent treasure seekers around the world to bring back unique and enchanting discoveries, including the finest in jade, pearls and colored gemstones along with porcelains and other fine home decor.

Throughout its storied history Gump’s has seen many changes — the most significant is its transformation from a modest mirror and frame shop into San Francisco’s premier destination for the very best in home décor, jewelry and gifts. The other big change is that this business that was started by a family 160 years ago is once again family owned — by ones who share the same passion as its founders in maintaining Gump’s original intent: to surprise and delight customers with beauty, elegance, a dash of whimsy — and always the unexpected.
