Built and painted entirely by hand, this desk is a magnificent example of the art of chinoiserie, popularized when Europeans first traveled to Asia in the early 17th century. Its fanciful landscapes are rendered in lustrous gold brushstrokes against a background of deep red lacquer. Crafted from select Asian hardwoods, the desk has nine drawers on two tiers, each fitted with a burnished brass pull; the large center drawer has a functional lock. A scalloped brass gallery rail surrounds the top of the hutch. Long, tapered legs have routed detail and are richly accented with gilt. 55"W x 30 3/4"D x 34 1/4"H. Imported.
